Confession – I’ve already busted out the pumpkin spice and am decorating my home for fall. We’re about to enter my favorite time of year when the temperature is perfect and all my favorite styles (boots, sweaters…you name it) are once again weather appropriate. There are many ways to embrace coziness for an eco-friendly fall.
This spring, I wrote about how I made some eco-friendly swaps in our household to reduce our impact on the environment. We’re still experimenting with new swaps, so naturally, it’s time to share my tips for a cozy & eco-friendly fall. And what’s great about this post is most of these tips will either have no impact on your budget or, even better, will save you money!
I’m not an expert in wellness, nontoxic, or eco-friendly living, but am learning and experimenting. I am always excited to share what works for this full-time working mom. My solutions are not perfect, but they work for our budget and busy schedule. Something is better than nothing. For us, these are steps in the right direction.
Here are 6 tips for a cozy and eco-friendly fall:
Start Your Eco-Friendly Fall at Home
Shopping your own home is probably the easiest and greenest option. Take a look at what you already have on hand instead of driving to the store and buying more stuff. We’ve amassed a collection of fall decor over the years that we reuse each year, but we also pull out some cozy items that aren’t fall specific, such as mixed-matched glassware that I use with faux foliage or vintage books.
Get Crafty
Even for a busy person, crafting can still be doable. Last year, I used some yarn from my craft stash that I’ve had for years and knitted a pumpkin while watching Netflix. If you are looking for crafts to make with mateless socks or worn-out shirts, you can also make pumpkins out of them. Instead of sending those items to the landfill, pull a fairy godmother and turn them into a pumpkin.
Sustainably Scent
If you want to smell cozy, I can’t recommend Primally Pure’s Almond Vanilla Body Butter enough. I’ve been using body butter for a few months now. Combined with dry brushing, my arms and legs feel so smooth and hydrated – a perfect way to prepare the skin for cooler weather. I love this brand because their products are non-toxic and the packaging is recyclable. A double win! And of course, Primally Pure also has fall home scents coming out in September so you can make your home smell very cozy. Use my code TMG to save 10% off your first order.
Update Your Cozy and Eco-Friendly Fall Wardrobe with ThredUp
Last year, I wanted the perfect pair of fall booties and sweaters, so I looked no further than ThredUp (follow this link to save $10 off your first order). Because it’s an online consignment shop, the prices are great for high-quality items. I found these Sam Edelman booties and this Theory sweater for a fraction of the brand new cost. I’ve written about my love for ThredUp before. If used clothes aren’t your thing, I also recommend Pact, which is a good source for comfortable, affordable, and eco-friendly fashion. So many cozy leggings! Use my link to save 20% off your first order with Pact.
Thrift for Quirky Finds
Remember when we all sang about popping tags? Thrift shops are excellent places to look for a cozy and eco-friendly fall. At thrift and second-hand shops, you can find truly unique and fun decor or even post-season Target goods. Not only will this save you money, but you’re preventing another item from going into a landfill. I’ve found some great holiday decorations and thrift shops. I actually did a lot of thrifting for my wedding!
Buy Local Pumpkins and Gourds
It’s a great way to support local businesses and farms, but it’s also more eco-friendly because local produce doesn’t travel as far so it cuts down on emissions. Plus who doesn’t love visiting an adorable pumpkin patch or farm stand? These are great places to get beautiful family photos and entertain children. One of our favorite spots in Northern Virginia is Nalls Produce.
