Yes, it’s been a while since my last post, which was all about hitting snooze because of having a baby. Here I am, now, on the other side, and ready to give an update.
The biggest update of all, which I am sure you don’t even need to guess, is my baby. Her name is Eliza and she’s very sweet. Eliza and our dog Mia have become best friends – it’s so adorable. We’ve had the best time watching Eliza grow and explore the world around her.
Life with Eliza has been lovely, but of course, comes with its challenges. Parenthood is not easy by any means, but more on that another day. Our family lives in a new normal that is slowly starting to feel…normal. My museum visiting frequency is not as high as it was pre-child, but since the weather is getting cooler and she’s older with stronger immunities, I’m excited for museum explorations to come.
This brings me to the other update, which is the long term vision of this blog. Since the previous blog post, I’ve put much thought about The Museum Girl’s mission and vision. Traditionally, I’ve focused on professional development by sharing what I’ve learned about working in the museum field along the way. Even though it’s been wonderful, I feel that it is time for a new direction. For those of you who follow The Living Historian, I hinted at this shift in my interview for #WhyHistoryWednesday. Sharing museums on Instagram brings me joy and I don’t find myself hitting writer’s block as often for content. I’ve decided that the spirit of my Instagram feed is a better direction for my blog. Going forward, I will be approaching museums and cultural organizations from a relevance, advocacy, and appreciation perspective.
Museums are competing with other things, like the beach or Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge (which I absolutely want to visit) or the fact that some people just aren’t that into museums. I love museums and cultural heritage sites so much and I want others to love them too. If I can convince non-museum goers to start carving out at least 2 hours of their vacations to visit a museum, my heart will be happy.
